STD 7 Panel – PCR test

Printer Print test

With this panel, it is possible to simultaneously detect seven pathogens that can cause sexually transmitted infections:

  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Trichomonas vaginalis (trichomoniasis)
  • Mycoplasma genitalium
  • Mycoplasma hominis
  • Ureaplasma urealyticum
  • Ureaplasma parvum (mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas)

Method and Sample Type

Molecular diagnostics using RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction) is applied in detection.
Specific pathogen genome sequences are detected and amplified from an appropriate sample.

The pathogens can be detected in first-void morning urine samples (10–50 ml) or urethral, cervical, or rectal (anal) swabs.

Prepare for the test

Instructions depending on the type of sample provided:

First-void morning urine should be collected in a urine container (10–50 mL).
Urethral or cervical swabs may be collected by a gynecologist or urologist, who will place the swab into a transport medium*.
Rectal (anal) swabs may be collected by a urologist or by the patient, who will place the swab into a transport medium*, according to the instructions: Instructions for collecting a rectal (anal) swab.
* The transport medium for swabs can be obtained at the reception desk of Poliklinika Breyer.

Sample delivery from a gynecologist or urologist may be done by the physician or personally – the patient delivers the sample.
It is also possible to send the sample by mail from anywhere in Croatia, according to the instructions: Sending samples by mail.

Warning

This test can detect pathogens even in individuals who do not have symptoms.
This test can also be performed anonymously.

What is an STD PCR test?

An STD PCR test is a diagnostic test used for the simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens that can cause sexually transmitted infections (STIs) using RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reactiom. RT-PCR is a sophisticated laboratory method that enables very precise and rapid amplification and detection of specific DNA sequences of pathogens that cause sexually transmitted infections.

A few key facts about STD PCR tests:

  • High sensitivity and specificity: PCR tests are extremely sensitive and specific, meaning they can detect very small amounts of the pathogen’s genetic material and accurately identify the exact cause of the STI.
  • Comprehensive testing: An STD test usually includes simultaneous testing for several common sexually transmitted pathogens. At Poliklinika Breyer, the following tests are available: STD 7 (includes testing for: C. trachomatis (chlamydia), N. gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea), T. vaginalis (trichomoniasis/trichomonas), Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and Ureaplasma parvum (mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas)). STD 4 (includes testing for: C. trachomatis (chlamydia), N. gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea), T. vaginalis (trichomoniasis/trichomonas), and Mycoplasma genitalium)
  • Fast and reliable results: Advanced technology such as PCR provides accurate results quickly, often within a few days.
  • Sample types: Samples for STD PCR testing may include urine and swabs of the genital area (cervix, urethra, and rectum).
  • Early detection: Due to its high sensitivity, PCR testing can detect STI pathogens even before any symptoms appear, which is crucial for timely treatment and for preventing further spread of infection.

Routine testing is essential for protecting sexual and reproductive health and is recommended for sexually active individuals, especially those who have new or multiple partners or belong to higher-risk groups.

It is important to note that although STD PCR tests are very reliable, their interpretation should be made in the context of clinical symptoms and the patient’s medical history. If you suspect a possible STI, it is recommended to consult a physician who can recommend appropriate testing and treatment. STD test panels can vary from one healthcare facility to another and may not always include all of the pathogens listed above, so it is best to check which pathogens are included to ensure the test fits your needs.

At Polyclinic Breyer, you can undergo the STD 7 (testing for 7 STIs) or STD 4 (testing for 4 STIs) without a prior appointment. For these tests, a sample of first-void morning urine is sufficient.
